What does ISO stand for?

ISO is an abbrevation of International Organization for Standardization. It is located in Switzerland and was established in 1947 to develop common international standards in many areas. Its members come from over 120 national standards bodies. ISO's purpose is to facilitate international trade by providing a single set of standards that people everywhere would recognize and respect.

What is ISO 9000?

The ISO 9000 family of Standards are internationally accepted guidelines on which quality assurance systems for organisations can be based. The standards are prepared and revised regularly by ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) working parties.ISO 9000 currently includes three quality standards: ISO 9000:2000, ISO 9001:2000, and ISO 9004:2000. ISO 9001:2000 presents requirements, while ISO 9000:2000 and ISO 9004:2000 present guidelines. All of these are process standards (not product standards). ISO first published its quality standards in 1987, revised them in 1994, and then republished an updated version in 2000. These new standards are referred to as the "ISO 9000 2000 Standards".

What is ISO 9000:2000?

ISO 9000:2000 is the newest version of ISO9000 replacing ISO 9000:1994.

The Concept of an Quality Management System is proposed in the following way:

ISO 9000:2000 Quality Management Systems - Fundamentals and vocabulary
lines out the concepts and word definitions for the Standard. In this aspect it replaces ISO 8402:1994.
This must be distinguished from the functions of:
ISO 9001:2000 which states the Requirements, and
ISO 9004:2000which serves as a Guideline for performance improvements.
